1846 – Theodore Parker was installed in Boston as a Unitarian minister. A friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson, he preached to crowds of up to 3,000 in Boston. He defied the Fugitive Slave Act by taking escaped slaves into his home. He wrote sermons with a loaded gun on his desk.
